Ocean Kayak - Materials & Construction

Linear, Medium-Density, Polyethylene Construction
When considering kayak construction, the key is to find material that is neither too flexible or too stiff. Flexible material is less efficient, but harder to crack. Stiff material creates a more efficient hull, but is more brittle and easier to crack. Linear, medium-density polyethylene (PE) is virtually indestructable under normal use. Being somewhat flexible, PE gives on impact, which keeps it from cracking, but maintains its stiffness using Ocean Kayak's compound curves. Polyethylene is also very abrasion-resistant, but in the event you scratch or gouge your Ocean Kayak, linear PE is repairable. Ocean Kayak offers free weld rod and repair instructions should you ever need them. By making kayaks using polyethylene, Ocean Kayak is able to provide a great product at an affordable price!

Sit-On-Top Design
The unique Ocean Kayak open cockpit allows the paddler to enter and exit the kayak easily from the shore, dock, or water, and paddle without feeling confined. In a sit-on-top, you can safely enjoy all the pleasures of kayaking without having to learn difficult self-rescue maneuvers. People of all ages and skill levels can feel like experts in a sit-on-top.

California-Form Hull
This tri-hull design enhances stability as the boat eases through the water. The long center keel area encourages boats to track straight when paddling and coasting. The wider "shoulder" areas of the hull ride high at the surface of the water without compromising speed under moderate paddling conditions. These areas provide signifigant secondary stability, and result in a very user friendly kayak design. In addition, Ocean Kayak hulls derive their stiffness from compound curves rather than sharp lines. These curves have fewer stress points, which makes them less likely to crack than other kayak designs, even under impact.
